By Sarah Cooling Elegant wheel thrown porcelain bowl decorated with a black geometric “sgraffito” pattern and delicate orange highlights, finished inside with a lustrous bronze glaze. Sgraffito is technique where two successive layers of contrasting slip or glaze are applied to an unfired ceramic body and then scratched to reveal parts of the underlying layer. Sarah is inspired to create glazes or surfaces where layers build curiosity and interest so at some point the qualities of the original porcelain or clay body will be apparent. This theme manifests in various ways from glassy crackle glazes to scratching through layers of slip and glaze.
